Why do you need an updated headshot?

Most professionals have a headshot that is over 3 years old. Several are even 5, 10, 20 years old!   When you meet a new client or business partner, you want to make the best impression. It's jarring to meet someone new, expecting them to look one way, and finding out they've changed considerably!

I call it "Cat-fishing your Clients". Here is a story from my networking adventures:

I walked into a coffee shop to meet a prospective business liaison. Our businesses were similar enough that we could share clients, but not so similar that we were competitors.  I stopped right inside the door, remembering the gentleman's very nice headshot. I was looking for someone in his late 40s, brown hair, thin and likely tall. I glanced around, no one fit that description.  I gave the person in the corner the side eye, could that be him? He was the only one sitting alone and had business journals out. He was also curiously looking at me, but he looked nothing like the photo I had seen.  "Ben?" I asked cautiously, he nodded. I was shocked. This man had a technically sound, beautiful headshot, it was taken by a great photographer, but he looked nothing like the person in that image.  I eventually asked him how long ago his head shot was - 15 years, he said. No wonder I didn't recognize him!

Over time the content of our meeting has faded, but the feeling  of that first sight remains, even when I see him today.
